The Essential Energy trailer brings with it a range of hands-on activities aiming to educate students about a range of energy sources. It runs through 4 sessions over a one hour period, covering “What is Energy?”, “The Biological Pathway”, “The Fossil Fuel Pathway”, and “The Renewable Energy Pathway”.

Target Group: Grade 3 to 6

Key Learning Outcomes:

Students:

  • Describe and compare the three primary paths by which energy flows in the world; Biological Pathway, Fossil Fuel Pathway and Renewable Energy Pathway
  • Describe and compare the uses of energy
  • Describe the different types of energy
  • Describe how energy is transported, transferred and transformed
  • Describe how the Sun is involved in the three primary energy pathways

The Essential Energy Trailer demonstrates the learning addressed through the Australian Curriculum standards. In particular, it addresses:

Science Understanding

  • Light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected and refracted
  • Electrical circuits provide a means of transferring and transforming electricity
  • Energy from a veriety of sources can be used to generate electricity
  • Some of Earth’s resources are renewable, but others are non-renewable
  • Energy appears in different forms including movement (kinetic energy), heat and potential energy,  and causes change within systems

Science as a human endeavour

  • Exploring ways in which scientists gather evidence for their ideas and develop explanations
  • Science involves making predictions and describing patterns and relationships

Science inquiry skills

  • Safely use appropriate materials, tools or equipment to make and record observations, using formal measurements and digital technologies as appropriate
  • With guidance, identify questions in familiar contexts that can be investigated scientifically and predict what might happen based on prior knowledge
  • Suggest ways to plan and conduct investigations to find answers to questions
  • Represent and communicate ideas and findings in a variety of ways such as diagrams, physical representations and simple reports
