Water Bugs

Year 3 – 4

Step 1 of 4

Students explore a variety of macroinvertebrates that live in local waterways and work to identify them based on their observable features.

They make inferences on water quality based on the sensitivities and tolerances of the macroinvertebrates they find.

In this program students will:

  • Observe and sort macroinvertebrates from a local water sample.
  • Identify macroinvertebrates using their key features.
  • Measure and determine water quality based on the presence of macroinvertebrates.
  • Discuss what makes a healthy water system and identify environmental stressors that impact waterways.

This program has been developed in partnership with WaterWatch Victoria.

Incursion programs are only available to schools classed as rural or metro disadvantaged by the Department of Education.
