Wind and other clean, renewable energy will help end our reliance on fossil fuels and combat the severe threat that climate change poses. Are you up to the design challenge?
The year is 2040. Climate change effects are now more apparent than ever before. The earth’s temperature continues to climb and with the call for the immediate cessation of fossil fuel power generation, we are at a crossroads. Your challenge is to work as an engineering team to design and build the most effective and efficient wind turbine using recycled material. Hydro turbines have the ability to convert the kinetic energy of moving water into electrical energy. They are used to generate electricity for large utility grids and in isolated locations for small communities or for single homes. Students will build a hydro-turbine and test the functionality of the model and then investigate how much energy can be produced over time. They will identify variables within the challenge and how these can affect the efficiency of the turbines.
